What is Reiki and how it works?

Dr. Mikao Usui

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early1900s, where the Reiki practitioner uses gentle hand movements to guide the flow of universal life force energy through the client's body. Now, Reiki is used all over the world, including in hospitals and hospices, to complement other forms of health treatments.

Reiki energy removes blockages and restores balance on all levels - physical, energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual. When energy flows freely through the body, it activates the body’s ability to heal itself. Blocked energy often starts in the emotional or mental energy layers through emotions and thoughts and, over time, moves into the physical body layer, causing discomfort, pain, and disease. When the blockage is released, the healing process takes place.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki stimulates your body's immune system, promotes relaxation, reduces tension, anxiety, and stress, relieves pain and fatigue, and supports the well-being of people who are healing injuries and from surgeries, as well as those receiving traditional medical treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and kidney dialysis. The relaxation response may also improve symptoms like headaches, insomnia, and nausea.

What happens in a Reiki session?

Ideally, Reiki should be performed in a peaceful and private setting. The client can sit in a comfortable chair or lie on a table.

The Reiki practitioner will explain the process at the first appointment and ask about the client's expectations or intentions. Next, the client will be induced into a relaxed state with breathing and meditation techniques, with relaxing music playing in the background. After that, the practitioner will clean and clear the client's energetic body and verify if there are blockages or unbalances in the energetic system.

After screening the body and identifying the energetic conditions and priorities for the client in that session, the practitioner will use gentle hand movements on or above the client's skin to guide the flow of universal life force to release energetic blockages, reduce stress, anxiety, pain, and promote healing and general well-being. The Reiki practitioner will typically keep the hands for 3-10 minutes in each area of the body, including the chakras, main organs, and glands.

The client may experience sensations in the body, such as heat or tingling. Some people report seeing visualizations such as colors or pictures or having memories emerge. During the Reiki session, harmful energies can be extracted, and the client can experience releasing sensations. At the end of the session, the main energetic centers should be balanced, the practitioner will smooth and rake the client's aura, and the client will leave with a relaxed and feeling-good sensation.

In-Person versus Long-Distance Reiki

For a long-distance session, the practitioner invokes the healing Reiki symbols together with the distance symbol, so energy can travel across time and space. It allows practitioners to clear blockages and perform Reiki on someone who is not physically present. Long-distance Reiki works according to an ancient principle called the Hermetic Law of Similarity, which holds that we are all connected and made of energy and part of a larger whole.

Regardless of distance, Reiki still increases feelings of relaxation, happiness, empowerment, and ease. We all have access to the life force energy that flows through all living beings. Long-distance Reiki is one of many ways to link to and channel this energy for the healing benefit of others.
